Below I have included a variety of resources that can be used in your classroom to teach language arts. These are resources I use in my middle school classroom frequently, and I recommend them to my colleagues. I have included a PDF with the complete list and description.

Kahoot is an online resource where teachers can create trivia games for the students to play using an electronic device. At the end of the game the teacher is given a spreadsheet that shows how each individual student answered the questions.

Socrative

Socrative is an online assessment tool that allows teachers to make a variety of assessments for their students. This resources has features including true/false, multiple choice questions, and the ability to add images to the questions. The teacher can also create a game where students race using rockets based on how quickly they correctly answer the questions. Teachers get a color coded spread sheet of their students results to the assessment.

Newsela is a resource that contains nonfiction articles based off current news stories. There are different categories including Arts & Culture, World History, Sports, and Health. They have also created text sets that connect to literature popular in classrooms including The Giver by Lois Lowry and Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Teachers can choose from a variety of Lexile levels based off your students' needs. Most of the articles have a 4 question multiple choice quiz that connects to each text. The students can log on to the website and read the article digitally.

Read Works is a website that offers texts on a variety of topics and a variety of Lexile Levels. This offers fiction and nonfiction texts with multiple choice questions. The articles will also focus on a skill or strategy like author's purpose or cause and effect. They have also created paired text sets where the texts connect to one another.

LearnZillion is a website that has video lessons for math and language arts that connect to the Common Core State Standards. The lessons have texts included that the videos utilize. There also offer videos in sets that practice many skills on one text. Students can be given a code to access the videos outside of class.

Communication Resources
Edmodo

Edmodo is a private classroom website where parents and students can have access to information about the classroom. Teachers can post assignments, give quizzes, and communicate with students outside the classroom. It is set up like a "Facebook" page with a "News Feed", and students can comment their questions on assignments and directly message the teacher. Teachers can set up discussions where students can respond, and the teacher can approve their responses. There is an app that parents and students can download to their smart phones.

Kidblog is a blog where a teacher can create a private class for the students to create a blog. The teacher will approve the posts and comments before they are live. This resource allows students to blog in a secure environment. The students can practice adding images and links to reliable resources in their blog.

Remind 101 is a feature where students and parents can receive a text message. This system allows teachers to send mass reminders. It does not share phone numbers and maintains the privacy of the students , parents, and teachers.

Class Dojo is an app that allows teachers to track the behavior of his or her students. Teacher can assign and take away points based off their behavior. The app also sends messages to the student's parents when they gain or loose points.

Prezi is an online presentation tool that allows teachers to create unique and engaging presentations. Middle school and high school teachers often present content material to their students. This is a unique online presentation tool that offers features not available on other presentation tools.

Read, Write, Think is a resource that provides teacher with lesson plan ideas and resources to use in the classroom. Teachers can search by topic or grade level and get ideas for a variety of types of lesson plans.
